260901-ohiratomae1
OHIRA TOMAE

INTERPRETATION OF THE STONE

This Ohira has a very silky smooth feel across the entire stone, an almost black slurry is easily produced after a few strokes producing a fine Kasumi finish on the soft cladding with a darker mirror like finish in the core steel giving very clear contrast.

Of medium hardness and fine grain with good ease of use, this stone is well suited to both single and double bevel kitchen knife polishing. On soft cladding such as Damascus and folded wrought iron I found it brought nice separation in the cladding layers. In the 6k-8k range I felt the polishing potential could be above 8k.

Tested on Tamahagane Honyaki, Genkai white 1 Honyaki, standard soft sanmai white 1 from Sakai, nantetsu and Kato sanmai. The stone performed well across all steel, carbon clad knives, wrought iron and similar iron. Depending on how you manage your water the kasumi finish can either be thick matte or fine.

Best used with little water for both polishing and edge sharpening. I tend to start most of my stones with a surface texture from a worn 600 grit atoma.

Over all a very versatile and enjoyable stone for both polishing and edge sharpening. Suitable for all sharpening levels on natural stones.
