These chopsticks are covered in a deep brown hue that's iconic of Susudake Chopsticks.

Over the years, the bamboo has been used as a framework for thatched roofs and has been exposed to the smoke from charcoal used in traditional hearths, resulting in a beautiful, sun-kissed (or rather, smoke-kissed) color.

Craftsman Wakatsuki's attention to detail is evident in the roundly shaved tip of the chopsticks. Instead of opting for a uniform design, each shaved part, which matches the chopstick rest, serves as a unique accent that creates a harmonious balance.

Susudake Chopsticks are unfinished, and their natural gloss only improves with use.
The chopsticks' smooth texture is another standout feature that promises to develop a gorgeous shine after years of use.

This is a truly exceptional product that you'll be excited to use and watch develop over time.

ORIGIN

Okuizumo Shimane Prefecture

Since BC 3000 the sunken hearth of thatched roof houses were used in the living area to cook food and warm Japanese homes. The smoke from the hearth slowly turns the bamboo framework a dark brown as well as drying and stabilizing over few hundred years of use.

By using the old bamboo from thatched roof houses which could end up as waste, Mr.Wakatsuki breathes new life into Susudake products instead of cutting fresh bamboo, helping to make a sustainable world, however thatched roof houses in japan are decreasing every year making the Susudake increasingly rare.
