At first glance, Susudake Chopsticks appear to have a bright color, but when you look closely, you can see a very deep and rich color.

The top part has a slightly darker shade of brown, and from there, a gradient of dark and light brown lines forms towards the tip of the chopsticks. The beautiful gradient of colors is something you wouldn't expect from a bamboo that was used as a framework for thatched roofs.

The top part of the chopsticks is completely shaved off, revealing the clean lines of the bamboo's pores, which transport water and nutrients. The overall appearance of the chopsticks is characterized by a mottled pattern, and each pattern is unique in size and color, making it fascinating to look at.

When Susudake was used as a framework for thatched roofs over decades or even up to a hundred years ago, did it have insect damage on the surface? The natural pattern created by irregular shapes and colors is stunningly beautiful.

After Susudake completed its job as a framework, it undergoes a thorough cleaning process, so there are no hygiene issues. The surface is also carefully polished, so enjoy the unique character of this bamboo.

ORIGIN

Okuizumo Shimane Prefecture

Since BC 3000 the sunken hearth of thatched roof houses were used in the living area to cook food and warm Japanese homes. The smoke from the hearth slowly turns the bamboo framework a dark brown as well as drying and stabilizing over few hundred years of use.

By using the old bamboo from thatched roof houses which could end up as waste, Mr.Wakatsuki breathes new life into Susudake products instead of cutting fresh bamboo, helping to make a sustainable world, however thatched roof houses in japan are decreasing every year making the Susudake increasingly rare.
