INTERPRETATION OF THE STONE

This Ohira is a great all round stone with both excellent polishing power and edge sharpening abilities.

In the 4k to 6k range I felt it could be used as a pre finishing stone as well as for finishing due to its even Kasumi texture on the soft iron and darkish hazy polish on the hard steel, almost satin like. With good water management and pressure control the steel could take on a darker mirror polish.

A fairly easy stone to use, I started the stone with a surface texture from a 600 grit atoma and a bit of water but I found any fine surface texture from nagura or similar to be fine in bringing up slurry.

The ease of use with this stone is very high with great feedback making it easy to achieve a very nice finish. I particularly liked it on wrought iron and similar steels.

Equally for edge sharpening using the same set up technique edge sharpening was smooth and controlled with good contact. The natural pattern on the stone I felt helped in producing a very fine yet toothy edge.

Overall an excellent stone for all levels of sharpeners or those looking to get their first natural stone.

Best suited for polishing, Kasumi finish and edge sharpening of kitchen knives and Japanese wood working tools. Single and double bevel iron clad carbon steel.

Prepared for Use

Komon does more than simply select workable natural stones.
Even the finest natural stone cannot be used for sharpening straight from the mountain. Each stone must be carefully prepared and finished before it is ready for use.

At Komon, each stone is carefully prepared and finished by craftsmen with extensive experience and knowledge of natural stones, so that its qualities can be experienced from the moment it is put to use.

  • A STABLE BASE

    We carefully flatten the back side to ensure stability during sharpening. When additional support is needed, we attach a wooden base to create a secure foundation.

    Any wobbling of the stone affects the precision of the sharpening process; stability is particularly crucial during final polishing and edge sharpening.

  • A READY-TO-SHARPEN SURFACE

    The sharpening surface is flattened and prepared for use.
    Softer stones intended for polishing and finishing are given generously rounded edges. Harder stones used for edge sharpening are also carefully rounded to prevent the stone from damaging the blade.

    As a natural stone is used, new layers of stone will gradually appear. Regular flattening and maintenance are therefore essential to keep the stone performing at its best.

  • PROTECTING THE STONE FOR YEARS TO COME

    Natural stones are formed by nature, and some may contain weaknesses that could eventually develop into cracks.
    We identify these stones in advance and, when necessary, reinforce the surrounding areas with cashew resin to help prevent future damage.

    Cashew resin can scratch a blade. Before use, any exposed cashew resin on the corner should be carefully rounded with a medium grit diamond plate.
