INTERPRETATION OF THE STONE

The first impression of this stone gives the feeling of a smooth buttery Nakayama, silky smooth feeling across the entire stone with incredible polishing power.

Overall a wonderful stone for both kitchen knife polishing and edge sharpening as well as sharpening Japanese woodworking tools.

The fine grain of this stone combined with the silky mud it produces gives a great fluid polishing experience over the entire stone. The finish it produces on clad steel is fine yet clean with good separation in cladding and steel as well, fine detail can be brought out in standard carbon cladding, Damascus and wrought iron or rentetsu. The polish from this stone on core steel or Honyaki was a light milky mirror finish on the brighter side when worked well

Best used with little water for both polishing and edge sharpening. I tend to start most of my stones with a surface texture from a worn 600 grit atoma but I found this stone was also good with a Shiro nagura or similar grain stone.

This stone has great potential and I felt many secrets to unlock.

Prepared for Use

Komon does more than simply select workable natural stones.
Even the finest natural stone cannot be used for sharpening straight from the mountain. Each stone must be carefully prepared and finished before it is ready for use.

At Komon, each stone is carefully prepared and finished by craftsmen with extensive experience and knowledge of natural stones, so that its qualities can be experienced from the moment it is put to use.

  • A STABLE BASE

We carefully flatten the back side to ensure stability during sharpening. When additional support is needed, we attach a wooden base to create a secure foundation.

Any wobbling of the stone affects the precision of the sharpening process; stability is particularly crucial during final polishing and edge sharpening.

  • A READY-TO-SHARPEN SURFACE

The sharpening surface is flattened and prepared for use.
Softer stones intended for polishing and finishing are given generously rounded edges. Harder stones used for edge sharpening are also carefully rounded to prevent the stone from damaging the blade.

As a natural stone is used, new layers of stone will gradually appear. Regular flattening and maintenance are therefore essential to keep the stone performing at its best.

  • PROTECTING THE STONE FOR YEARS TO COME

Natural stones are formed by nature, and some may contain weaknesses that could eventually develop into cracks.
We identify these stones in advance and, when necessary, reinforce the surrounding areas with cashew resin to help prevent future damage.

Cashew resin can scratch a blade. Before use, any exposed cashew resin on the corner should be carefully rounded with a medium grit diamond plate.
