INTERPRETATION OF THE STONE

This Hideriyama Suita with Red Renge is medium soft stone that produces both a grey mud easily and a darker grey depending on the steel and soft cladding. The stone gives a very thick matte Kasumi with a hazy mirror finish. In the 4k to 6k grit range possibly higher if worked over time to break down the slurry would produce a darker finish on the core steel

This stone I found good at blending convex grinds on sanmai and or clad single bevel knives.
The soft mud easily makes this type of work smooth and easy. Can be followed with Kasumi powder mix to even out the surface for a more esthetic look. This Hideriyama I particularly liked for Honyaki it really whitened up the hamon area giving the hamon a rich color during final polishing. On folded steel like nantetsu or wrought iron it gave good color and detail.

A stone for any level of sharpening, easy to use with little draw back and fairly forgiving.

RECOMMENDED USE FOR :

Best suited for kitchen knives, single and double bevel iron clad, carbon steel, polishing, Kasumi finishing.

Prepared for Use

Komon does more than simply select workable natural stones.
Even the finest natural stone cannot be used for sharpening straight from the mountain. Each stone must be carefully prepared and finished before it is ready for use.

At Komon, each stone is carefully prepared and finished by craftsmen with extensive experience and knowledge of natural stones, so that its qualities can be experienced from the moment it is put to use.

  • A STABLE BASE

We carefully flatten the back side to ensure stability during sharpening. When additional support is needed, we attach a wooden base to create a secure foundation.

Any wobbling of the stone affects the precision of the sharpening process; stability is particularly crucial during final polishing and edge sharpening.

  • A READY-TO-SHARPEN SURFACE

The sharpening surface is flattened and prepared for use.
Softer stones intended for polishing and finishing are given generously rounded edges. Harder stones used for edge sharpening are also carefully rounded to prevent the stone from damaging the blade.

As a natural stone is used, new layers of stone will gradually appear. Regular flattening and maintenance are therefore essential to keep the stone performing at its best.

  • PROTECTING THE STONE FOR YEARS TO COME

Natural stones are formed by nature, and some may contain weaknesses that could eventually develop into cracks.
We identify these stones in advance and, when necessary, reinforce the surrounding areas with cashew resin to help prevent future damage.

Cashew resin can scratch a blade. Before use, any exposed cashew resin on the corner should be carefully rounded with a medium grit diamond plate.
