INTERPRETATION OF THE STONE

I really enjoyed testing this large Ohira. A medium stone in the 6k-8k range, you could really push into the stone with pressure on the soft iron to build up a dark thick mud while still maintaining a smooth even feel across the entire stone.

Tested on blue and white carbon steels, white 1 Honyaki as well as Togo Reigo, all took to turbine with ease.
For cladding i tested carbon steel Damascus and standard carbon steel cladding as well as wrought iron, rentetsu and Kamaji. This stone had the ability to bring out some very nice detail while keeping an even smooth finish.

I started the stone with a 600 grit atoma surface
washing of any mud from atoma. I prefer to use little water when polishing but this stone handled regular amounts of water as well due to its medium softness and fine texture.

With great feed back, ease of use and large size this is a very enjoyable stone to use.

Prepared for Use

Komon does more than simply select workable natural stones.
Even the finest natural stone cannot be used for sharpening straight from the mountain. Each stone must be carefully prepared and finished before it is ready for use.

At Komon, each stone is carefully prepared and finished by craftsmen with extensive experience and knowledge of natural stones, so that its qualities can be experienced from the moment it is put to use.

  • A STABLE BASE

We carefully flatten the back side to ensure stability during sharpening. When additional support is needed, we attach a wooden base to create a secure foundation.

Any wobbling of the stone affects the precision of the sharpening process; stability is particularly crucial during final polishing and edge sharpening.

  • A READY-TO-SHARPEN SURFACE

The sharpening surface is flattened and prepared for use.
Softer stones intended for polishing and finishing are given generously rounded edges. Harder stones used for edge sharpening are also carefully rounded to prevent the stone from damaging the blade.

As a natural stone is used, new layers of stone will gradually appear. Regular flattening and maintenance are therefore essential to keep the stone performing at its best.

  • PROTECTING THE STONE FOR YEARS TO COME

Natural stones are formed by nature, and some may contain weaknesses that could eventually develop into cracks.
We identify these stones in advance and, when necessary, reinforce the surrounding areas with cashew resin to help prevent future damage.

Cashew resin can scratch a blade. Before use, any exposed cashew resin on the corner should be carefully rounded with a medium grit diamond plate.
